What Is Glutathione? Understanding One of the Body's Key Antioxidant Systems

You may have heard glutathione mentioned in conversations about antioxidants, wellness, healthy ageing and cellular health. But what actually is it — and why does the body need it?
Glutathione is a powerful antioxidant that your body naturally produces. It is found throughout the body and plays an important role in protecting cells, managing oxidative stress and supporting several normal biological processes.
Here’s what you need to know.

What is glutathione?
Glutathione is a naturally occurring substance made inside the body from three amino acids:
Glycine
Cysteine
Glutamate
These amino acids combine to create glutathione, which is then used throughout the body as part of its natural antioxidant defence system.
Unlike some nutrients that need to come entirely from food, your body is capable of making its own glutathione.
Why is glutathione important?
Every day, our cells are exposed to something called oxidative stress.
Oxidative stress occurs when there is an imbalance between reactive molecules — often referred to as free radicals or reactive oxygen species — and the body's ability to manage them.
Some oxidative activity is completely normal and is part of everyday human biology.
However, the body also has sophisticated antioxidant systems that help keep these processes in balance.
Glutathione is an important part of this system.
What does glutathione do in the body?
Glutathione is involved in several normal biological processes.
Antioxidant defence
One of glutathione's best-known roles is helping the body's cells manage oxidative stress.
It works alongside other antioxidant systems rather than acting alone.
Cellular protection
Because glutathione is found inside cells throughout the body, it forms part of the systems that help protect cellular structures from excessive oxidative damage.
Normal liver processes
The liver is one of the body's major processing and filtration organs.
Glutathione participates in several normal liver pathways involved in processing certain compounds so they can be appropriately managed and eliminated by the body.
This is sometimes described as "detoxification".
Supporting normal cellular function
Glutathione is involved in maintaining the environment cells need to function normally.
This is one of the reasons it continues to be studied across areas including cellular health, metabolism, ageing and oxidative stress.
Where does our glutathione come from?
Your body makes glutathione itself.
To do this, it requires the amino acids glycine, cysteine and glutamate.
These amino acids can be obtained through dietary protein and normal metabolism.
Glutathione is therefore another good example of why the foundations of health — including adequate nutrition — matter.
What can affect glutathione levels?
Glutathione levels aren't necessarily the same throughout a person's life.
Researchers have investigated the relationship between glutathione status and factors including:

Oxidative stress
Certain health conditions

Lifestyle factors
This doesn't mean that everyone needs to increase their glutathione levels.
The body carefully regulates its internal environment, and more of something isn't automatically better simply because that substance performs an important function.
What foods support normal glutathione production?
Because your body produces glutathione using amino acids, consuming adequate dietary protein is important.
A varied diet containing quality protein sources, vegetables, fruit and other nutrient-dense whole foods provides many of the building blocks and micronutrients involved in normal antioxidant systems.
Rather than searching for one "superfood", overall dietary quality is generally the more useful place to focus.
Is glutathione the body's only antioxidant?
No — and this is an important point.
Glutathione is sometimes referred to as a particularly important antioxidant, but the body's antioxidant defence system is much bigger than any single compound.
It involves numerous nutrients, enzymes and biological systems working together.
Vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium-dependent enzymes, catalase and superoxide dismutase are just some of the other components involved in antioxidant defence.
Glutathione and oxidative stress
Glutathione has become an interesting area of research because oxidative stress is involved in many aspects of human biology.
However, it's important to distinguish between understanding what glutathione does naturally in the body and assuming that increasing glutathione will automatically produce a particular health outcome.
Those are two very different scientific questions.
Good health information should make that distinction clear.
The bigger picture
Glutathione is an important part of human biology — but it's also a great example of just how interconnected our bodies are.
Its production relies on amino acids. Its antioxidant activity works alongside numerous other systems. And its function is influenced by the broader environment within the body.
