What Is Oxidative Stress? And Why Does It Matter for Your Health?

You’ve probably heard the words antioxidants, free radicals and oxidative stress thrown around in the health and wellness world.

But what do they actually mean?

Oxidative stress is a completely normal part of human biology — but when the balance shifts too far, it can affect the way our cells function.

Here’s a simple breakdown of what oxidative stress is, what can influence it, and how your body naturally works to keep things in balance.




What is oxidative stress?

Your body is constantly carrying out thousands of chemical reactions to keep you alive and functioning.


As part of normal processes such as producing energy, the body generates molecules known as reactive oxygen species, often grouped under the more familiar term "free radicals".


Free radicals aren't automatically bad.

In controlled amounts, they actually have important roles in things like cell signalling and immune function.


The problem occurs when there are more reactive molecules being produced than the body's antioxidant systems can effectively manage.


This imbalance is known as oxidative stress.


Think of it as a set of scales.

On one side you have oxidative processes occurring naturally throughout the body.

On the other, you have your body's antioxidant defence systems working to keep those processes in balance.


Healthy physiology involves maintaining that balance — not eliminating oxidation completely.



What can contribute to oxidative stress?

Oxidative stress doesn't usually come down to one single factor.


Our bodies are influenced by our environment, lifestyle, nutrition and overall health.

Factors associated with increased oxidative stress can include:

  • Smoking

  • Excessive alcohol consumption

  • Air pollution and environmental exposures

  • Poor nutritional intake

  • Chronic psychological stress

  • Inadequate sleep

  • Certain health conditions

  • Excessive exposure to UV radiation

  • Very intense or prolonged physical activity


Some of these factors are within our control, while others aren't.


And importantly, experiencing one of these things doesn't automatically mean there is something "wrong" with your body.


Oxidative processes are happening in all of us, every day.



Where do antioxidants come into it?

Antioxidants help the body manage reactive molecules and maintain normal cellular balance.


Some antioxidants come from the foods we eat, while others are produced naturally by the body.


Your antioxidant defence system includes substances and enzymes such as:

  • Glutathione

  • Vitamin C

  • Alpha Lipoic Acid

  • Vitamin E

  • Selenium-dependent enzymes

  • Superoxide dismutase

  • Catalase


Rather than working independently, these systems interact with one another.



What is glutathione?

One antioxidant you may have heard increasingly discussed is glutathione.


Unlike some antioxidants that primarily come from our diet, glutathione is naturally produced inside the body.


It is made from three amino acids — glycine, cysteine and glutamate — and forms an important part of our natural antioxidant defence system.


Glutathione is involved in protecting cells from excessive oxidative stress and participates in several other normal biological processes.

Does exercise cause oxidative stress?

Interestingly, yes — but that doesn't mean exercise is bad for you.


Exercise temporarily increases the production of reactive oxygen species.

This is actually a great example of why oxidative stress shouldn't simply be viewed as "bad".


The temporary stress created by exercise can trigger adaptations that help the body become more resilient over time.


Regular physical activity is associated with significant health benefits and can support the body's own antioxidant defence systems.


It also highlights an important principle in health:

More antioxidants and less oxidation isn't always the goal. Balance is.



Can stress affect oxidative stress?

There is growing research examining the relationship between psychological stress and oxidative processes within the body.


Occasional stress is a normal part of life.


However, prolonged stress can influence numerous physiological systems — including sleep, appetite, hormone signalling and behaviours that affect overall health.


This is one reason looking after your health involves much more than focusing on individual vitamins or supplements.

Sleep, recovery, nutrition, movement and stress management all matter.



What about sleep?

Sleep is one of the most underestimated foundations of health.

During sleep, the body carries out a huge range of restorative and regulatory processes.


Consistently inadequate or disrupted sleep has been associated with changes in oxidative stress and inflammatory processes.


Rather than searching for increasingly complicated health interventions while regularly sleeping five hours per night, sometimes it's worth returning to the basics.


Aiming for consistent, good-quality sleep is one of the most valuable things we can do for overall health.



Can food help support the body's antioxidant systems?

Nutrition provides many of the nutrients and building blocks required for normal antioxidant function.


A varied diet containing plenty of vegetables, fruit, quality protein sources, healthy fats and minimally processed foods provides nutrients involved in these systems.


Colourful plant foods are particularly interesting because they contain a wide range of naturally occurring compounds studied for their roles in health.


Protein is also important.

For example, your body requires amino acids to produce glutathione — one of its major naturally occurring antioxidants.


Again, it comes back to the bigger picture.

There isn't one food that "switches off" oxidative stress.



Do you need antioxidant supplements?

Not necessarily.


More isn't automatically better when it comes to antioxidants.


The body uses reactive oxygen species for normal biological functions, and antioxidant systems are carefully regulated.


Whether supplementation is appropriate depends on the individual, their diet, health circumstances and potential deficiencies.


Rather than taking a long list of supplements simply because each ingredient has an interesting biological function, a more considered approach is to look at what you actually need.



How can you support your body's natural antioxidant systems?

There is no single strategy for "eliminating oxidative stress" — nor would eliminating oxidation entirely be desirable.


Instead, focus on supporting normal physiology.


That starts with the foundations:

Eat well. Prioritise a varied, nutrient-dense diet containing adequate protein and plenty of whole foods.

Sleep consistently. Good-quality sleep supports countless processes throughout the body.

Move regularly. Regular exercise provides benefits extending across cardiovascular, metabolic and mental health.

Allow yourself to recover. Training, work and life all create stress. Recovery matters too.

Don't smoke. Cigarette smoke is a significant source of oxidative compounds.

Be sensible with alcohol. High alcohol intake can contribute to oxidative stress and has broader health consequences.

Consider your individual health. Persistent symptoms shouldn't automatically be attributed to "oxidative stress". Appropriate medical assessment is important when something doesn't feel right.



Health optimisation doesn't need to be complicated

The wellness industry can sometimes make health sound incredibly complicated.

One week it's oxidative stress. The next it's mitochondrial dysfunction, cortisol, inflammation or another trending biological pathway.


The science behind these topics can be fascinating — but good health doesn't necessarily require obsessing over every pathway happening inside your cells.

Your body already has sophisticated systems designed to maintain balance.
