Your first IV therapy appointment in Melbourne: what to expect
Updated: Oct 25
Our appointment starts with a conversation
If you are considering your first IV therapy appointment in Melbourne, you may have questions about what happens before, during and after a visit. At Sanara Wellness, the starting point is a conversation about your health history and what you would like to discuss.
A free phone consultation gives you a chance to ask initial questions and understand the next steps. It is not a promise that treatment will be appropriate. Your individual assessment comes before any decision to proceed.
Tell the team about your medical conditions, medicines, supplements and allergies. Bring up anything that has changed since you made your booking. If you are unsure whether something matters, mention it.
Assessment, questions and consent
Before treatment, the team checks your suitability and discusses the proposed plan. Sanara’s IV treatments are administered by AHPRA-registered nurses, and the compounds administered are prescribed by an Australian registered doctor.
You should understand what is proposed, why it is being considered, the possible risks, alternatives and costs. You can ask questions and decide not to proceed. Having a consultation does not commit you to an infusion, it is a no obligation discussion.
Useful questions include:
What is the reason for recommending this treatment?
What evidence supports it for my situation?
What are the alternatives?
What will the full appointment cost?
How much time should I allow?
What happens during the infusion?
If you decide to proceed after assessment and consent, a nurse places a small cannula in a vein and connects the infusion line. You sit comfortably while the nurse monitors you during the treatment. The nurse will check in on you, but please let them know if you are feeling unwell at any point.
Appointment length depends on the treatment and the individual. General IV drips take 45 minutes to 1 hour, but a nurse will confirm this with you at the time of booking.
Planning your appointment
Wear clothing that allows easy access to your forearm and follow any preparation instructions given by the team. Do not change your medicines or usual fluid intake without advice from your treating clinician.
Sanara Wellness’s clinic is upstairs at My Recovery Lounge, 381 Bay Street, Port Melbourne. If stairs or access may be difficult, contact the team before booking. Mobile appointments are also available across greater Melbourne, subject to location, availability and suitability.
After your appointment, please follow the aftercare advice and reach out to us if you need to. IV therapy is subject to individual assessment and suitability.
